This article follows one $1,000 investment in Apple stock, made on January 9, 2007, the day the first iPhone was announced. Each row shows what that same $1,000 was worth on the day each following generation was announced. For comparison, the S&P 500 columns show the same $1,000 put into an S&P 500 index fund (SPY) on the same day.
All figures include reinvested dividends and are valued at the August 31, 2026 close.
Dots mark each announcement. Dashed line: the $1,000 invested.
The $1,000 at each iPhone announcement

What the numbers show
- By August 31, 2026, the $1,000 was worth $114,439. The same $1,000 in the S&P 500 was worth $7,775.
- Growth was slow in dollar terms at first. By the iPhone 7 in 2016, nearly ten years in, the investment was worth $8,950. Most of the dollar gain came after that.
- The biggest jump was between the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 announcements, up 126% from September 2019 to October 2020, during the stock market rally that followed the 2020 pandemic crash.
- It did not rise every year. It fell 21% between the iPhone 3G and 3GS announcements, during the 2008 financial crisis, and 24% between the iPhone 5 and 5s.
