About Hindsight Returns

Hindsight Returns shows what a past investment would be worth today. Enter a ticker, an amount, and a date. The calculator buys at that day's closing price, holds to the most recent close, and charts the value over time, with and without reinvested dividends.

Who runs it

Hindsight Returns is an independent site run by Chris Murray of Murray Commerce, with a contributor from Automation Acceleration. It is free, needs no account, and is supported by advertising.

Why we built it

Many return calculators ignore dividends, and some count them twice. Ours uses the industry-standard total return method and checks every dividend breakdown against a second, independent calculation. The methodology page shows the formulas.

Data

Daily prices come from Yahoo Finance and are adjusted for splits and dividends. Results are for education only and are not financial advice.
